Steve McQueen

I started my policing career as an officer with the St. Johnsbury Police Department in 1978 while I was attending Lyndon State College.  Upon completion of my degree in Business Management, I started working for the Lamoille County Sheriff’s Department in Hyde Park as a full-time patrol officer.  In July of 1982, I was appointed Chief Deputy Sheriff with responsibility for the patrol function and 24 hours County Dispatch Center. 

In January of 1984 I was hired by the Winooski Police Department as a Patrol Officer.  While employed with the department, I served as a Patrol Sergeant, Detective Sergeant, Lieutenant and finally, appointed Chief of Police in 1996. Since becoming Chief, the police department as instituted a full-time school resource officer program, Community Justice Center, to include a restorative justice panel, victim services, housing mediation and offender re-entry program.  

I’m a Trustee of the Vermont Police Association, former president of the Vermont Association of Chief’s of Police, and have represented the Chief’s Association on numerous legislative study committees.  

I’ve been a resident of Essex since 1984 and currently serve as Town Moderator, School District Clerk and was an elected Justice of the Peace for over 10 years.
